Brine Your Turkey

By Deborah Harris

The most important step is the first step in baking a juicy turkey. Brine your turkey! You must always brine your turkey first. When you brine your turkey, you ensure a moist, tender, juicy turkey that is flavorful to the last bite.

Here are the easy steps to successfully brine your turkey. The mixture is enough for a 14-16 lb turkey.

In a large bowl add:

  • 1 gallon of Buttermilk

  • 8 tablespoons Kosher Salt

  • 1 tablespoon Black Pepper

Mix these ingredients well.

Cover a large bowl or container your turkey will fit in with an oven roasting bag. Place the turkey inside the bag. Pour the buttermilk mixture over the turkey, making sure the mixture covers the whole turkey. Add 1 whole sliced onion and 6 garlic cloves, and spread them evenly over the turkey. Squeeze the excess liquid out of the bag, and seal with a knot or wire trash bag twist tie.

Refrigerate for 24 hours. After 24 hours, pour buttermilk mixture off of the turkey. Rinse the turkey thoroughly inside it's cavity and outside of the turkey. Pad dry and roast your turkey.
