                                                           Yoga as a therapy

    7:30 am wake up, Oh! What's wrong? I can barely walk, it hurts. What did I do yesterday?  These are the questions that goes through everyone's mind that has ever felt heel pain.

    PLANTAR FASCIITIS was the diagnosis, better known as heel spurs to most.  I was asked a series of questions: do you work out, do you climb hills, do you jog, or jump rope?

    Do you wear high heels for period of time? When you work out do you wear comfortable sneakers? 
    Do you use stairs a lot on a daily bases, or do you do any activity that constantly pounds your feet?
    After answering YES to all of those questions, I was asked was I diabetic, have flat feet, high arches or have any weight gain. No were the answers to those questions.

    Compounding daily walking that include hill climbing, jogging, fast walking, going up and down stairs in my home and wearing high heels a lot takes a toll on your feet.  Your feet that move you from here to there need more care than we take time to give.

    Recommendation: physical therapy for 4-6 weeks. Learning to stretch, stretch and stretch.  Understanding that my feet must be attended to after a hard work out, or just moving about doing my daily routine.

    Before bed, and before getting out of the bed in the morning, or lying down for several hours.  One of the stretches I learned was rolling a bath towel lengthwise, placing it under the ball of my feet, holding the towel at each end and pulling gently toward you.
     And many more, these stretching exercises were very beneficial.  They did help some what. 

    While at the library one day I ran across a Yoga video by Jane Fonda. I've always thought about trying Yoga, and in the back of my mind I want to find a intense stretching routine.  Checked it out, brought it home, watched it a couple of times and tried it out. It's awkward at first moving in and out of the poses, memorizing the video from beginning to end, but I liked it.  2 weeks later I noticed there was absolutely no foot pain. I remember saying out loud, the answer is Yoga.

    There's Longevity in doing Yoga and once you establish the poses, you can practice it anywhere.  I do it on the beach, backyard, hotel room, and in my favorite spot in my home.  I do lift weights, but when I do Yoga, I lift my body weight and don't need machines or rubber bands all of the time.  

    It's been over 20 years since I was diagnosed with PLANTAR FASCIITIS, and I feel great. At the end of the day and 7:30 am when I'm starting my day, I no longer hurt under bottom of my feet. Yoga is for any age, and the benefit is Longevity.

    40 pounds each is the weight, these are BIG melons.  It's mid August, and I really hit the lotto with this one. Early July is usually the peek time for sweet juicy watermelons, but today I was given 2 perfectly grown melons.  Keeping this nutritious fruit in the fridge, practically everyday of the season, hydrates on the hottest day and increases my metabolism.                                                                                                      
     The melons were grown by a local farmer, he happen to mention that his largest melon of the season was 97 pounds. Cheers to him for growing the sweetest and juicy watermelons of the season.

     I lift my 40 pound melon up to the counter top, washed it, cut and slicing the into the tub container.  Minutes later  my family picked up the scent and  bowls were being filled with sweet juicy watermelon.  'Alabama Grown Sweet Juicy Watermelon' - nature's candy, tastes so good.


    " IT'S A MUST" EAT ICE CREAM EVERYDAY IN JULY- National Ice Cream Month

    JULY is National Ice Cream Month, one of the hottest months of the year.   JULY what a great time to eat lots of ice cream.  Vanilla, Chocolate, Strawberry, the flavors are endless, but Vanilla is still the most popular flavor.  President Ronald Reagan designated JULY as National Ice Cream Month and The 3rd Sunday in the month of JULY National Ice Cream Day, THANK YOU Mr. President.

    When I was a little girl some 50+ years ago, my Mom always made sure we had chocolate and vanilla ice  cream when my sisters and I sat down to watch the The Ed Sullivan Show, they just seemed to go together, those were good times.  Birthday parties and all occasions, ice cream is a must have.  Today there are many flavors to choose from and when you decided to have a bowl or scoop, enjoy it and  tune out any mental calorie counting or guilt, preventing you from having something so delicious. There are 31 days in the month of JULY I bet you can have a different flavor everyday. So go on, ENJOY, it's National Ice Cream Month.          

    Laundry Ideas--Sorting and Washing Clothes

    Washing and drying clothes efficiently saves time and money. Many of us are stressing out about white white colors bright, and not losing the deep hue of our favorite red blouse.

    Let's start with sorting clothes, and work our way to an empty washer! Next time we will talk about properly drying clothing.

    Sorting clothes doesn't have to be confusing, here are 5 categories of color groups and the best temperatures to wash them in:

    Whites, lights, and almost whites -- Hot water

    Yellows, and whites with prints -- Warm water

    Brights (reds, oranges, and light blues) -- Cold water

    Darks (purples and dark blues) -- Cold water

    Blacks and dark browns -- Cold water

    Remember to check tags, and put to the side any pieces of clothing requiring hand wash, dry clean, or dedicates.

    The items that are dedicates should be washed together, with the washer set on the delicate cycle, cold wash, cold rinse.

    Permanent press is for your dressier clothes that can be machine washed. A good example is a nice blouse, skirt, or khakis that are not quite delicate, but you still want to wash with care. Permanent press should be cold wash, cold rinse unless there are tough stains.

    Sturdy white clothing items, like underwear, or plain white T-shirts, should be washed in hot, and rinsed in cold.

    Newer clothes tend to bleed more than clothes that have been through a few wash cycles. If you feel nervous about your favorite electric blue pants bleeding on the rest of the load, there is a test!!!

    Bleed Test:

    Dip a small corner of a inner seam into a small, clear container of water. Make sure the water is the proper wash temp and add detergent. If you see color in the water, it's best that you wash that item separate!

    An Eco-friendly practice would be to wash all of your clothes on cold wash, cold rinse. Washing with cold water certainly saves energy, and money on your monthly heating bill. There many heated debates among people who want to decrease wasted energy as much as possible, and those who just care about the cleanliness of their clothing.

    Go Green! Save Money! Save The Earth!

    Both sides have valid arguments, since cold water usage is better for the environment. The only catch is that cold water does not clean fabric well, requiring longer cycles. Also, some of the money saved from lower heating bills may be spent on extra detergent need to clean stains.Cold water also can slow the drying process, since fabrics like cotton absorb more water.

    If you are using bleach, remember to handle it carefully because it is a hazardous chemical. Only use for plain whites, never use for a white shirt with a print. Pour the bleach into the water, letting it mix well with detergent before adding clothes. Do not pour bleach directly on clothes, that may cause spots.

    If using liquid fabric softener, add it in the rinse cycle. Do not pour directly into the wash, pour into the fabric softener dispenser.

     Chicken is the most popular and versatile protein worldwide. Baking, grilling, and frying are some of the many ways chicken can be prepared.

    Chicken has a high level of Niacin ( vitamin B3), which has been shown as an effective preventative measure against cognitive decline. High levels can protect the brain against Alzheimer's disease.

    Chicken, which is rich in selenium (antioxidant nutrient) , becomes activated and serves as cancer prevention. Chicken is popular is a healthier source of protein, which is helpful in repair the muscle tissue , as well as strengthening the hair, skin, and prevents bone loss. This protein is effective in the weight loss, by keeping you full longer.

    Chicken has the polyunsaturated fats ( good fats). 

    Chicken should always be cooked thoroughly. When handling raw chicken, always wash the counter surface, your hands, and anything that comes in contact with the meat. That eliminates contamination of Salmonella, an organism that can make the body very sick if ingested.

    Purchase the pieces of chicken that you eat and buy a lot. To store drumsticks, thighs, or breast you will need a roasting pan or a large aluminum pan 2-4 inches deep.   Remove plastic wrapping and discard,

    Place each piece at least 2 inches apart, filling the pan completely. The pan should be placed on the bottom of the freezer floor, assuring that the pieces do not touch. 45 minutes is enough time for the chicken to harden.

    Remove and place the pieces into a freezer storage bag. Chicken should immediately go into the freezer. Now you can thaw only what's needed, thawing is quicker and easier..

    Buy a lot of what you like to eat and store the rest until later. It saves time, your budget, and eliminates several stops by the supermarket.

    Wash the chicken thoroughly.
    Add your favorite house seasonings to that breast or thigh! Place in an roasting pan or aluminum pan for quick and easy clean up, add a 1/2 cup of water to prevent scorching.

    Baking in a preheated oven at 370° for 37 to 45 minutes, this will present you with a moist and delicious piece of chicken. Serve with garden salad, sliced apples, pasta, a hot cup of soup....

    Select pieces of chicken ( drumsticks or thighs), rub olive oil thoroughly over chicken. Add seasoning, garlic, black pepper, salt, season salt, and/or your own special blend.

    Start preparing the grill by placing charcoal on one side of the grill, leaving the other half without coals. When coals are ready, place the chicken on the rack over the coals and let the smoked taste get sealed in. Cook the chicken on each side for 2 minutes. Remove chicken, and place on the side of the grill without coals and cover for 25 minutes.

    In a grill safe pot or bowl add your favorite sauce, and place it over the coals. Close the grill until it starts to simmer. Remove sauce and brush on chicken. Close grill for 25 minutes; then remove and place chicken on a platter. Add the remainder of the sauce if desired.

    Barbecue never tasted so good!!! Serve with or with out sides.

    Select pieces of chicken, wash them and air dry. Add house seasonings, covering both sides, dust chicken with flour.  In a skillet add 2 ½ cups of vegetable oil and preheat on medium high, then place chicken in the frying pan when oil is popping hot. Cook on each side for 3 minutes on each sides with thighs and 2-1/2 for breast finally until golden brown,.

    Drain the hot oil from the chicken, and place on a platter layered with paper towel Serve hot, warm or cold cut.
